Human have always felt the urge to express their feelings and emotions to the other people since the early days of mankind. No matter whatever age it may be human have always come up with new ideas and methods through which they can communicate their thoughts and emotions to the person on the other hand. We have all learned that man is a social animal and therefore we prefer making friends and having family members around us whenever we need them in happy and sad times. In the modern age too, humans have come out with different ways in which they can not only communicate their words but also express them in the best way possible.

In the early days when the technology of internet was used it was only limited for military and intelligence use but gradually this form of communicate began to move into a bigger social sphere and people began to communicate with each other over the internet and many new technologies came up that allow us to communicate over long distances. Online chat is just one of the few technologies that became an overnight success because people were able to talk with people from far away lands and therefore people were able to talk with their friends and relatives that stay in different countries and they could save money that used to spend on international calls.
However, chatting over the internet does not allow you to express your happiness and sorrows the way you want it because the words you type in were just mere words and the readers could not feel any emotions attached to it. However, soon people began to make use of the symbols on the keyboard in a different fashion and soon emoticons were born. These emoticons quickly got the attention of the world because now one was able to send a smile over long distances and that was a great achievement in human history.
In the western style, emoticons were symbols that you need to read sideways. Hence, the best way you can read these emoticons is to tilt your head on your left shoulder and read the symbols. Some of the most common western emoticons are
and
. However, soon there was another breakthrough and many East Asians came up with their style of emoticons like (*_*) and {^_^} where you don’t have to tilt your head to read the emoticons. Koreans soon launched their way of communicating with the world and introduced Korean Hangul letters as emoticons.
Hence, gradually emoticons became the way of life on the internet and today every other person who likes to chat on the internet prefers to use emoticons to make the conversation more lively and interesting instead of just typing words that make no sense. Today, emoticons have moved on to a different level where they can animate and give out expressions like human face. Emoticons are now also used in cell phones because it cuts down the number of words that you need to type in text messages.
